Gold Panda & DJ Oneman

Huge double-header in Perth last night. For only $5, people got two see two of the best right now in their respective fields, beat wunderkid Gold Panda and Rinse FM badman DJ Oneman. Word spread quick and the night sold out leaving more than a few punters stranded outside the Bakery. The venue was packed, with most there to see the Pitchfork hyped Gold Panda with a decent amount holding out for bass music from Oneman. Opening act was Australian beatmaker Woosha who put on a very impressive display. It’s clear that he’s a huge fan of Flying Lotus and he carries it off well. Expecting big things from him in the future indeed.

A bit later on the first of the headliners, Gold Panda, stepped up to the stage and proceeded to blow everyone away. While I like Gold Panda, I wasn’t sure how it was going to go over live, but we were treated to a surprisingly danceable set. It sounded like LA beat music run through a house music filter, or vise versa. The BPMs fluctuated around bringing feelings from hip hop, house and even a little bit of juke music. It was fresh and for the hour that he played everyone was very impressed.

With the unenviable task of trying to keep a room full of hipsters from bailing to the outside area, Oneman stepped up the decks and proceeded to show everyone not only why he’s considered one of the top Djs of the year but why bass music deserves a seat at the table of dance music. While the room initially drained of everyone but the dedicated, it slowly filled back up over the course of his hour and a half set. Furthermore it wasn’t the same crowd of people just nodding their heads, it was people full on dancing. That’s right, when it needs to Perth can still bust a move, not just cross its arms.

The set had a long build up of garage and bass music with an early highlight being The Street’s ‘Has It Come To This”. Shortly after it was followed up with a huge run of Jamie XX’s ‘New York is Killing Me’, 50 Cent’s ‘Ayo Technology’ (I’m serious) and Girl Unit’s ‘Wut’, which even got its own rewind. Just when the crowd couldn’t go anymore ham, a short while later Blake’s CMYK got dropped and there was a massive rush to the dancefloor from outside. Other big track to get a reaction was Sicko Cell’s “The Information”. Expect big things from that mysterious track this year. According to Twitter Oneman was well impressed with the notoriously fickle Perth crowd. A fantastic night, big ups to and Don’t Sleep for putting on an awesome, forward thinking night. There’s hope for this city yet.

12th Planet x Doctor P

Finally got to play this track last night. Despite my preference for disco and hip hop, I do enjoy any opportunity to play in the 140 bpm range. Allows me to play the dubstep, weird stuff (Radiohead, Gorillaz, Schlacthofbronx, Bird Peterson) and southern hip hop that I don't normally have the chance to. So anyways, was djing at this house party and since one of the guys I was swapping with was a dubstep DJ (he was very good, playing all on vinyl too.) I had an excuse to keep the tempo up there for a lil' while.

Now this track, while a little noisy, is just mad fun. The intro bits have that double time feel to it, which gets the crowd hyped and the dancehall style vocals fit very nicely on it. Before long it drops into that bog standard Doctor P style which the world seems to love following the near ubiquity of Sweet Shop. And yes while its less melodic than what I usually like, the track itself is so much fun, I get over my usual hangups about it.

And for those who are wondering, the party went absolutely ham for it!

I think I'm getting more into dubstep these days and would like to give it a shot at djing it out somewhere if i get the chance. Like with other genres of dance music, just cause it is dubstep doesn't mean i automatically love it, there is alot of shit stuff out there. just awkward drums, crappilly produced bass, just generally boring music.

Having said that, when its good its great and these days when im drinking i crave the stuff. and hell last night it was a very refreshing change from the jacking house that was being played most to the night to hear some awesome wobbles at the very end. and more so to see a crowd of average people just lose their shit to it.

The new track Tron by Joker is easily the best dubstep track ive heard. Normally i have to grow into a song or be really drunk, but this one grabbed me straight away. Check it out right now

Welcoming Rant/The Swiss

So I don't exactly anyone at all to start reading this travesty of a blog for some time. That being said who knows, maybe it will take off.

Anyways, firstly, gotta say. I'm a bit disappointed at the moment. Dance musics got a bit uninspired recently. Well, let me be a bit more specific. Despite first getting into this stuff at the tender age of 12 with my purchase of Discovery by Daft Punk (shit yeah thats some cred right there), i really got involved when this whole blog house thing was taking off. Even since my formative years listening to Daft Punk and Fatboy Slim, I'd dreamed of one day djing and playing the music i loved to huge crowds of people.

Yet with the advent of this whole electro movement ting, and i finally had some money in my pocket, it seemed like an achievable thing. Piles and piles of free, quality music rushing around the internet to be played to friends and danced around to like a complete tosser. Those were the days when the MSTRKRFT remix of Monster Hospital was the coolest thing around and every banger, classic, mashup, rap break down and choon seemed ultra fresh and the best thing ever. and hell alot still holds up today.

It's not like that anymore. Everything got too distorted. It wasn't fun anymore. Quality control was raped and left on the side of the road by a marauding HYPEM. Hearing rap with electro wasn't mind blowing. The new generation of producers who emerged in the gap after everyones first album really didnt know how to make songs. Like nothing against their production abilities, but there werent SONGS. The new heroes (Fake Blood, MSTRKRFT, Crookers, Digitalism) while celebrated by everyone (shit id still go seem dj/play live) really wernt making the classics that we wanted them to. The scene ran out of steam and everyone (most very slowly) started going their separate ways.

We now kinda exist in a place where the fucking buff dudes with no shirt on play 2 year old electro to the girls who have bleached their hair so much it looks like its going to fall out. People have run to the hills embracing tech-house (boring), dubstep (exciting but very very hit and miss) and disco (love it but dont always get it myself). As such a guy like myself is left in a place where he needs something to get him excited about dance music that he like and can still get a crowd moving.

So while this seems like a depressing place to be (it is sometimes:( ) all hope is not lost. This is blog thats designed to showcase the stuff that still gets me going, stuff thats exciting, quality and generally awesome. Stuff like Australian electro, disco, hip hop, UK funky, some dubstep and maybe some psychadelic indie shit. Oh and dont forget some shameless self promotion.

Anyways assuming anyone read that elitist rant, i figure they should be rewarded with at least some music. so here it is.

This is prolly the best thing ive heard dance music wise for a minute and best yet they're from Australia. This is what I'm talking about when i mean Australian electro, that 80's trashy but insanely smooth and funky vibe to it, that combination of cheeky synths but a driving bassline. Splits the difference for disco and electro heads and is still a good SONG. remember those things SONGS, not pieces of shit? yeah thought so.
